Healing Pathways The keys to our successful support program are: 1.) a structured curriculum that is based on the most up-to-date research in childhood bereavement and 2.) that children are able to meet, share and learn from their peers who are also trying to cope with the death of a loved one. Together, in a safe and supportive environment, children begin to understand that their feelings and reactions are normal, and that they can learn to deal with the difficult emotional and life changes they are experiencing. Our Healing Pathways programs are lead by dedicated volunteers, who are trained and supervised by our Clinical Director, Dr. Val Molaison. Children are grouped by age with approximately 5-7 other children and two adult leaders. Each group follows a curriculum that has been designed specifically for their development level. In addition to children's groups, a concurrent group is held for parents and guardians with the purpose of providing emotional support and education on how to help their bereaved children. Many of our volunteers have lead groups for several years at Supporting Kidds; others may be involved in post graduate programs in psychology, mental health or counseling. All volunteers draw upon their own childhood experiences with loss as they lead the children in activities such as art, music, movement, writing, games and discussions.
