Our New Center It has been 1-1/2 years since we permanently relocated to our new Children’s Grief Counseling Center in Hockessin. Many exciting things have happened since that time.
Our staff has expanded
and now includes an office manager, Lynn Corbett, as well as two
mental health therapists, Kristen VanDoren and Megan MacDonnell, who
provide evaluation, consultation and treatment services to bereaved children
ages 2 to 22 and their
families. We also welcomed three new
We held our first summer day program, teen movie night and will soon begin a unique bereavement program, Girl Power, for high-risk teenage girls in collaboration with the Adolescent Day Treatment Center at Wilmington Hospital.
We have also continued to offer our highly regarded grief support program, Healing Pathways, which has been filled to capacity since the move. The new center and playground provide the perfect environment for specialized social gatherings to bring bereaved families together for fun, relaxation and support, which is so critical to the healing process.
Some Facts About the Children We Serve ·Since 1989, Supporting Kidds has served over 4,000 bereaved children and their family members.
· Typically,
the children referred to our programs have reacted to the death with anger,
withdraw · The most common loss experienced by children in our programs is the death of a father (53%), mother (24%) and sibling (15%). · The average age of the person who died is 40 and is usually a parent. · The top causes of death experienced by the children are violent death such as murder (30%), sudden death due to illness such as heart attack (30%), terminal illness such as cancer (28%) and accident such as car or boat (12%).
